Widen Doorways Without Knocking Down Walls
INSIDER TIP: You can increase accessibility through doorways for those with wheelchairs or walkers without moving walls.
Open up to a new idea
Narrow doorways
can be a real problem for people who are using a wheelchair or walker. Although doors can be widened by cutting a larger frame and installing a bigger door, this can become quite a costly—and possibly unnecessary—project. So what’s the alternative? Replace existing door hinges with offset hinges.
Offset Door Hinges, also known as Swing Clear Hinges, add an additional two inches to almost any doorway. They will actually swing your door clear of the frame creating barrier-free access for most wheelchairs and walkers. And Offset Hinges are not only cost-effective, but can be retro-fitted to handle most residential doors. These specialty hinges use the same screws and holes as the existing hinge, making them easy to install. Most standard doors are 30 inches wide; offset door hinges can create the minimum clear opening of a 32-inch doorway, which is necessary to be compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
Refresher:Offset Door Hinges are a great solution for households that use wheelchairs or walkers as well as for assisted living facilities that need to comply with ADA regulations.

Banish the Flu this Season
Flu season is on its way. And seniors should definitely consult with their physicians to see if getting a flu shot is a good idea for them. Flu shots can help prevent getting specific strains of the flu and are available in fall and winter. Flu-shot recipients with Medicare Part B do not have to pay when the shot is administered by a healthcare provider that accepts Medicare.
