Home Modification & Aging in Place

An ultra-portable and affordable device grabs what's out of reach

INSIDER TIP: TeleStik Portable Reachers can increase the easy of daily living by adding up to 3 feet to your reach.

With all its nooks and crannies, a home can be a deceptively complicated place to navigate. Cooking or entertaining can turn it into a veritable obstacle course for seniors, especially for those aging in place with limited mobility or anything that lessens their range of motion. At times we all wish we had an extra set of hands to help us pluck items from high shelves or fish the remote from under the couch when we can't quite reach it ourselves

In the past, solving these problems would mean a walk to the broom closet or bedroom to get a step-ladder or, more likely, a traditional reacher—an unwieldy gun-shaped contraption with a claw at the end of the barrel. The TeleStik Portable Reacher aims to make these complicated contraptions obsolete.

TeleStik's flagship model features a telescoping arm—similar to a TV antenna—with an adhesive pad on the end. According to the manufacturer, the pad is good for up to 2000 uses, won't tear paper or fragile items, and can be restored to its original "stickiness" with only a light hand washing. A second version, with its magnet and hook combination, is useful for lifting mugs and tins, and picking up small metal items such as pins and needles. Each can be extended to reach up to 34 inches and collapsed to 8 inches to fit in a purse or bag.

Because they have no triggers or buttons, TeleStick reachers don't require the hand strength that traditional grabbers with trigger grips do, and their telescopic design means they weigh about as much as a remote control. Although originally designed for people with limited mobility, a new reacher can bring independence and ease to the life of anyone who suffers from back pain or just wants a simpler way to pick up items without bending over or kneeling down.

TeleStik Portable Reachers come in the two varieties mentioned as well as the TS3040, which combines the features of both, housing them in a large, soft casing that's easy to grip for those with arthritis. An optional strap can be purchased to aid those with reduced grip strength. All models can lift most items up to one pound in weight and range in price from $15-$30.

Refresher: TeleStik Portable Reachers are an attractive, lightweight way to get a helping hand anywhere you need it.
