Two Simple Light Switch Modifications

INSIDER TIP: Make turning on lights a cinch for seniors or those with limited mobility or range of motion with two simple and inexpensive light switch modifications.

Flipping a light switch can be problematic for those who use wheelchairs or otherwise have limited mobility or low vision. If reaching up to the switch is a problem for an elder in your life, an alternative to costly relocation of wall light switches is the Duro-Med Light Switch Extension Handle. The twelve-inch long, durable, clear plastic piece mounts over the existing light switch so that lights can be turned on and off easily from a lower vantage point.

Another issue some seniors have is with turning the switch on lamps, especially as a result of arthritis, tremors or limited range of motion. The big lamp switch fits over the top of most standard switch lamps—and is designed for a minimal amount of effort to be used to turn small knobs on lamps.

Refresher: Help a senior with limited mobility or range of motion to flip on a light or turn a lamp’s switch in their home with easy and inexpensive ways to alter light switches.

Medicare’s Open Enrollment Period is Here!

All Medicare recipients can join, drop or switch their Medicare Advantage plans from January 1 through March 31. Go to www.medicare.gov to compare plans online. Please note that you cannot add or drop Medicare prescription drug coverage at this time.

Additionally, Medicare General Enrollment is also happening during this same time period and is open to anyone eligible for Medicare to get Part A, which is hospital insurance, or Part B, which is Medical Insurance. Learn more about your Medicare options.

Calling any large agency can be quite taxing on your nerves, but Medicare’s new tip sheet tells you how to make your call to them more efficient and lets you know who you should ask to speak to. We suggest printing it out and keeping it right by your phone to make that call go that much faster!
