Keep Your Brain in Shape with Online Games
INSIDER TIP: Lumosity provides fun, easy exercises to keep your mind sharp.
It's normal to experience some degree of memory loss as we age—our brains actually shrink at a rate around .8% each year after 30! The good news is that current research shows keeping your mind limber and staying socially in-the-loop can slow the brain's deterioration as we age and even delay the onset of Alzheimer's and dementia.
Lumosity is a Website filled with games, exercises, and assessments designed to keep your brain alert and engaged, keeping track of your progress as you do so. Their website promises to improve your cognitive ability if you do brain-training activities for as little 10 or 15 minutes each day. You can pick from over 30 brain-building games, divided into five sections: speed, memory, attention, flexibility and problem solving. It also offers a variety of course selections targeted to improve specific abilities, from Flexibility and Memory Boosts all the way to Cognitive Rehabilitation.
In addition to offering a wide range of brain-training games, Lumosity also offers the ability to track your progress after completing each exercise using a number they call BPI or Brain Performance Index that is calculated based on your score. After each game, it also shows a breakdown of what the test seeks to improve, and what mental skills you exercised. It's fun to watch your BPI rise as you train, and the evaluations can help guide your learning and help you improve faster. If you choose to pay for a subscription, you also get access to Lumosity's knowledge base and blog, which reports the latest news on brain health research, shares brain-training tips, and has special sections on brain aging and Alzheimer's disease.
Lumosity offers a free, unrestricted trial period for the first seven days once you register with an email account. After that, subscriptions are available in a variety of different durations, starting at $9.95 for monthly access. Brainmetrix, a similarly-themed site, offers a number of brain-building exercises free-of-charge, and is a good place to visit if you're interested but don't want to commit to a monthly membership.
Refresher: Lumosity online games can help you keep your brain engaged and in top condition.

Aging Intelligence
We all know about intelligence tests—and that in the last decade ideas about "emotional intelligence" have been quite popular, but what is your Aging IQ?
Well, the National Institute on Aging set out to test America's knowledge of what it means to be "old" and to challenge preconceived ideas and prejudice about age. The quiz involved several short excerpts followed by questions to gauge what you think is correct information about aging and its related issues. So take the quiz—or send it along to someone who maybe is suffering from a bit of ageism to see if it opens up their mind.
