AstraZeneca Patient Prescription Assistance Program

INSIDER TIP:
Find out if a senior in your life is eligible for financial assistance with the AstraZeneca medications they have been prescribed.

Seniors on a tight budget can find reprieve for high drug costs from the most unlikely of places—the pharmaceutical companies. AstraZeneca, one of the country's large pharmaceutical companies, offers a Patient Prescription Assistance Program. The following guidelines must be met in order to qualify:

  • Individuals living alone must have an annual income under $30,000. A two-person household must have an annual income under $40,000.
  • 3% of your annual income must be spent on prescription medications.

Seniors who have not yet spent 3% of their annual income on prescriptions but will within the year can open an account in the program; the account is marked pending until the qualifying amount is reached. Covered drugs include:

  • Arimidex, a drug used to treat breast cancer in post-menopausal women
  • Casodex, a treatment for prostate cancer
  • Crestor, a statin that reduces cholesterol
  • High blood pressure medications include Atacand, Atacand HCT and Plendil
  • Stomach and esophageal issue medications include Prilosec and Nexium
  • Asthma medications Accolate, Pulmicort Flexhaler, Rhinocort Aqua and Symbicort
  • Mood stabilizer Seroquel and Seroquel XR
  • Toprol-XL, a beta-blocker
  • Migraine medication Zomig-ZMT and both tablet and nasal spray versions of Zomig

Eligibility is not affected by having Medicare Part D coverage or no coverage at all; however, seniors with Medicare Part D should call (800) 957-6285 for assistance, whereas those with no coverage should call (800) 424-3727. When phoning, you will need to provide a social security number, contact details, your monthly total gross income and your monthly prescription costs.

Refresher:
AstraZeneca's Patient Prescription Assistance Program provides eligible seniors a chance to lower their prescription cost.

Seniors Online

Are seniors online? Are more seniors surfing the internet these days—and will those numbers rise exponentially? Our own aging in place technology expert columnist Laurie Orlov tackles these and other issues in a recent article PCs & Internet Solutions for Older Seniors. In the article she delves into many of the misconceptions about seniors and personal computers. Find out more about her findings—and her insight—into what should be done to get more seniors hooked up and online.

Medicare is going electronic—and also green—by asking Medicare & You handbook recipients to sign up for emailed versions of the booklet. To receive your booklet in an electronic format this October, visit www.mymedicare.gov and sign up for the eHandbook.
