(Provided by Gilbert Guide's on-site reviewer)

The director of Alterra Sterling House of Lewisville has implemented many positive changes since she began there in 2005; not only are there many new staff members, most of the residents are new as well (there were only fourteen when she took her post). We observed several of them creating table decorations for the monthly family night that includes a buffet and entertainment, courtesy of the director. The activity calendar listed a poetry workshop, a Super Bowl party and visits from a local Brownie troop and community choir. Residents enjoy craft projects, such as devising cards for Valentine's Day. The large sink and tile floor in the activity room make cleaning up after cooking and other messy projects a breeze. A traveling library makes regular stops so that residents may check out reading materials.

We came across a resident with mild dementia as she wandered about a broad hallway. Our guide, the director, greeted her by name and asked her to join our tour. The director then encouraged her to answer our questions about residents' rooms, making her feel useful. The sunny rooms feature walk-in closets with shelves, which the staff thoughtfully adjusts to each resident's height. All of the bathrooms have walk-in showers and additional storage space.

The appealing aroma of fresh coffee wafted from the charming dining room. Meals are served cafeteria-style through a window between the kitchen and dining areas. Expansive windows and archways give the dining room an airy quality. 1930s music played softly in the background as we took in the sunny living room. Birds preened in their cage while fish darted about the fish tank. A piano and fireplace add to the appeal. French doors open from the living area to a lovely sunroom furnished with wicker chairs and potted ferns. The square-shaped facility features a courtyard at its heart, where residents exercise along the pathways and seating areas invite quiet contemplation.
