Southwest sits on elevated ground above Alta Mesa Boulevard. Lush foliage of trees and trimmed shrubs deck the entrance to the facility. Neutral-colored walls of the interior complement the light brown squares in the tiled floor. Hanging prints of nature scenes adorn the walls. Residents' rooms are clean and spacious, although somewhat institutional. The wide hallways are equipped with handrails. The building is brightened by a combination of natural and fluorescent lighting. The comfortably furnished dining room is also used for socials, dances and occasional performances by local children's singing groups. Residents gather and socialize in the activity parlor as well as the library. During our visit, many residents were chatting in the garden while relaxing on comfortable patio furniture. Everyone seemed to be enjoying the cool afternoon breeze. Residents and staff interact warmly with each other. The monthly newsletter, produced jointly by residents and staff, alerts residents' families of upcoming events, monthly menus and care plan schedules. The goal to keep everyone informed has created a close-knit community. We found the staff very accommodating. At the time of our visit, residents and staff had raised over $1,000 for victims of Hurricane Katrina.
