Alterra Sterling House of DeSoto and its grounds are surrounded by an undeveloped tract of wooded land, in utter peace and quiet. The facility resembles a large family home, with an inviting porch that leads to the white stone and brick exterior. Neat landscaping surrounds the home. Shade trees and comfortable seating make socializing in the outdoor area popular among residents, who also enjoy manicures, sewing, board games, arts and crafts, movie nights, happy hour and religious services. As we arrived for our tour, a lively group of residents prepared to go shopping. Cheerful residents mingled in small groups throughout the home. Staff members were friendly and enthusiastic as they went about their work.

The furnishings in the common areas feature a mix of solids and floral patterns. A fireplace creates a dramatic focal point in one of the common rooms, furnished with dark wood tables and armoires. Immaculate earth-toned carpet runs throughout the building. The library provides residents with a tranquil spot for reading or quiet contemplation. The home is brightened by natural and fluorescent light as well as brass and frosted glass fixtures. Painted landscapes hang on the pale walls of the broad hallways. Residents furnish the moderately sized rooms, which feature neutral-colored walls and carpet that complement a variety of décor. Wide chairs provide residents with comfortable seating as they take their meals at the matching dark wooden tables in the spacious dining area. The menu on the day of our visit announced a meal of beef stew, salad, baked apples and peach pie. Snacks are available all day long.
