A number of residents have been able to extend their stay at Autumn Leaves for several years thanks to its wide spectrum of care, which includes independent living, assisted living and skilled nursing. The owners are two doctors who take a hands-on approach to ensure the facility's smooth operation. They spend one day each month working at the home. Their philosophy, that no job is too small, is refreshing. They perform tasks that range from cleaning and attending to resident care and administrative work. As we toured the skilled nursing unit, our guide greeted the handful of animated residents in the common areas by name. Cherrywood crown molding, light green wallpaper and earth-toned carpet accented with blue and gold comprise the luxurious décor in the common rooms and broad hallways. Brass and frosted glass sconces, recessed fluorescent fixtures and generously sized windows fill the home with light. Residents' sunny rooms are moderately sized and feature additional space for personal belongings. Residents usually take meals in their rooms, although they occasionally use the spacious dining area. A glass wall in the dining room displays attractive views of White Rock Lake, which the stucco building overlooks from atop a hill. Residents enjoy watching squirrels scamper among the oak trees surrounding their home.
