Summerville at Lakeland Hills was among the first accredited assisted living programs in Texas. Its location near a major intersection provides easy access to the surrounding urban area while also retaining a tranquil, homey feel. The Victorian décor features classic paintings, beautiful lamps and antique occasional tables.

Activities include sing-alongs, religious services, birthday parties, performances by outside entertainers and field trips to casinos and shopping malls. There are three common areaswhere residents relax among the overstuffed sofas and ottomans to visit or watch television. During our visit, the kitchen was filled with the delicious smell of baked chicken. Popcorn and ice cream are among residents' favorite snacks.

One resident introduced us to the two parakeets that live at the facility, explaining that she loves to visit them as they remind her of her children. As she put it, "they never shut up!" Two other residents were enjoying themselves in the beauty salon. Residents' spacious rooms are freshly painted and adorned with personal touches such as antique nightstands and hanging art. The hallways are wide and have unique seating options including a daybed-style bench.
