Located in a quiet neighborhood off Pembrook Avenue, St. Joseph's is a staple in the community. The well-maintained red brick frame and classic wrought iron fence surrounding the front yard belie its age of fifty years. Park-like landscapes of mature trees and pretty flowerbeds add elegance to the exterior.

A hodgepodge of old and modern décor, including ceramic tile floors, freshly painted walls adorned with artwork, antique furniture and oak bookcases creates a homey atmosphere. Residents' rooms are spacious enough for personal furnishings and are equipped with hospital beds. Each has a garden view. Soft lamps and overhead fixtures complement the abundance of natural lighting throughout the facility. Residents gather in the comfortably furnished, roomy common areas. We observed residents on walkers and wheelchairs move about these rooms with ease. The living room features a big-screen TV and the hallways are equipped with handrails.

During our visit, the smell of home-cooked meals and fragrant spices filled the air. Residents bring in personal snacks or choose from a wide selection offered by the staff. Visiting near the outdoor hummingbird feeder is among residents' favorite pastimes. Three seating areas with patio furniture beckon residents to relax and enjoy the surrounding nature. St. Joseph's hosts daily religious activities at the onsite church, as well as weekly performances by visiting singing groups. Toward the end of our tour, one gentleman (a resident) offered to finish the tour so that our guide could rest her feet. He mentioned how he "loves everyone and everything" about St. Joseph's and feels "very much at home" there.
