A posh Dallas community is home to Signature Pointe on the Lake, which sits on lively Preston Road. Shade trees abound in the pastoral setting surrounding the red brick building. Ducks paddle in the fountain at the center of the facility's man-made lake. A quaint seating area is located onshore. Breathtaking chandeliers hang from the vaulted ceiling in the foyer. The upscale furnishings include wooden tables and hutches. Green and gold carpeting extends from wall to wall. A cheerful group of residents waited for their families to pick them up for holiday activities as we began our tour. Light from large windows and elegant fixtures brighten the facility. Beautiful flower arrangements and comfortable chairs fill the expansive hallways. Crown moldings accent the earth-toned walls in residents' rooms. Some rooms boast private patios; all enjoy lovely views of the landscaped grounds.

The waitstaff make a formal appearance in jackets and ties in the elegant dining room, where they serve meals. Our mouths watered as we read the menu, which listed turkey, mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie. The staff frequently holds socials and happy hours for the residents. Other activities include exercise, games, arts and crafts, and outings to movie theaters and shopping destinations. Guest musicians entertain the residents on the facility's grand piano.

Signature Pointe offers Alzheimer's and skilled nursing care in addition to assisted living. The secured Alzheimer's unit is divided between residents in the early stages of the disease and those in the more advanced stages. Therapeutic activities for Alzheimer's residents often involve pets and music. It is plain to see that the staff genuinely cares about the residents. One example of supportive behavior includes validating action, such as helping residents who believe they must prepare for a job or other activity they performed in the past.
