Preston Hollow is part of an affluent Dallas neighborhood that features multi-million dollar homes. The Alzheimer's unit is a well-blended addition to its sister assisted living facility. The building enjoys proximity to NorthPark Center and the city's vibrant downtown area. The stately home with white columns that houses the facility fits right in with its residential neighbors.

A winding wooden staircase is the stunning focal point in the foyer. The floral carpet coordinates nicely with the rich maroon and forest green furniture and drapes. Oak columns and moldings add lovely elements throughout the home. The Alzheimer's unit was clearly designed with the residents' special needs in mind; the décor reflects only the simplest patterns. Alarms and security pads control access to the home. The hallways are clear of obstructions and are equipped with handrails. Residents' rooms have expansive windows that let in plentiful sunlight. Nametags and room numbers label the doors of the private rooms.

Tables dressed in linen and leather-like rolling chairs furnish the dining area. Large windows offer a pleasant view of the small courtyard, where oak trees shade the seating area. A typical menu includes oven fried chicken, roasted new potatoes with gravy, seasoned broccoli and raspberry parfait squares. During our visit, many residents enjoyed a post-lunch nap. Activities include exercise, gardening, ceramics, baking, watching movies and listening to guest musical performances. Residents also attend scheduled outings to church services, shopping areas and tourist attractions. The Life Engagement program at Preston Hollow is based on each resident's interests, abilities, history and routine. The engagements promote cognitive, physical, sensory, and creative skills, allowing residents to maintain a comfortable level of independence, while they are fully supported by staff members.

Staff members and residents interacted warmly with one another. A nod to charming Southern roots, the staff politely address residents by title and first name—for example, "Ms. Betty" or "Mr. Daniel." Perhaps the most noteworthy aspect among Preston Hollow's special offerings includes a five-day respite stay—at no charge—for potential residents to "test drive" the facility.
