Medallion Assisted Living and Memory Care Community boasts two local advantages: upscale residential surroundings and proximity to Galleria shopping and restaurants on Preston Road. Splendid oak trees border the red brick building. Visitors and residents travel through a long covered walkway, away from the clamor of the street to enter the facility. The interior décor is somewhat dated; the furniture appears well-worn but comfortable. At the time of our visit, the freshly painted walls indicated management's ongoing remodeling project. The secured Alzheimer's unit is located in the main building.

Residents' rooms are small, but each has a view of the street or garden. Residents are encouraged to decorate their rooms to suit their tastes. The dining room, which doubles as the primary common area, is bathed in natural light. The freshly stocked salad bar supplements tasty entrées such as baked chicken and grilled vegetables.

The interior courtyard features lush greenery and soaring oak trees. Residents often relax on comfortable patio furniture or tend to their plants in the "potting station." A varied event calendar that includes morning worship, Shabbat services, fitness instruction, social hour, "movie and popcorn night," sing-alongs and bingo games promotes familiarity. The staff coordinates memory-stimulating tasks, including "life" activities such as table setting, laundry folding and flower arranging for residents with Alzheimer's. We observed a group of residents engaged in pleasant banter on the patio. The friendly staff and residents made our visit an enjoyable one.
