The philosophy at Avalon Glendora is that institutional settings are inappropriate for people with Alzheimer's. Therefore, the staff strives to provide a genuine feeling of home, working hard to promote residents' self-esteem and dignity. Several of the animated residents thoughtfully asked how we were doing during our visit.

The urban home is close to shopping and entertainment, yet the neighborhood retains a certain country charm. A circular driveway and manicured hedges greet visitors to the ranch home. The retro décor brings to mind a living room, kitchen and den straight from the 1960s. While modern sofas and loveseats provide comfortable seating, dated fixtures shine mellow lighting throughout the home. In contrast to the smallish common area, the adjacent dining room, kitchen and breakfast nook have a spacious feel. The long hallway is wide enough to accommodate wheelchair users. Handmade blankets and artwork created by the residents add coziness to their small bedrooms. Several lamps supplement the limited natural lighting within each room. An oasis of tropical plants and trees near the outdoor swimming pool shades the seating area favored by residents. A wrought iron fence surrounds the pool. Several residents mentioned how they love to spend evenings strolling on the lighted walkway near the pool. Field trips to shopping malls are another favorite pastime.

The menu boasts hearty favorites such as chili, meatloaf and turkey. Cookies and milk and other comforting snacks are served daily.
