Squirrels played and birds chirped as we approached Avalon Canongate in North Dallas. A large patio in the rear invites residents to relax in the shade of trees or stroll along the meandering walkway. The attractive common areas inside the facility are furnished with leather sofas and chairs as well as oak occasional tables. Shades of brown and white compose the color scheme. Overhead fixtures and plentiful windows create an abundance of warm lighting throughout the facility. Hallways are wide enough to accommodate wheelchair users. Residents' rooms are furnished with oak nightstands and armoires. The formal dining room serves a dual purpose; it is used for both meals and social gatherings. The table is elegantly dressed in linen and attractive tableware is used in place of plastic dishes, which are typical of most Alzheimer's facilities. The menu of country-style cuisine boasts favorites including meatloaf, baked chicken, and stew.

Daily activities include neighborhood strolls, listening to music, and reminiscence exercises. Field trips are offered weekly. A wide selection of movies is available to residents, who enjoy watching the big-screen TV. The staff was very friendly with us and attentive to residents. This no doubt is a great indicator of quality care; the residents were happy and were noticeably sociable throughout our visit.
