The two buildings of Avalon South Arlington rest on a tranquil country road. Several tall trees punctuate the lawn between the buildings. We had the distinct impression of visiting a friend's home when we stepped inside. Softly hued paint, hanging plants and a wooden coat rack at the front door create a warm atmosphere. Residents often assist with meal preparation in the kitchen. The lunch served during our visit looked and smelled delicious. Down-home entrees such as pot roast, ham and baked chicken are among some of the mouthwatering selections. Daily snack offerings include fruit, homemade cookies and juice. Although they were generally reserved during our visit, several residents excitedly mentioned that they enjoy frequent trips to the mall and zoo. Other favorite activities include manicures and pedicures, exercise and game hour. The staff and residents interact as though they were family. This was exemplified when, during our tour, one resident noticed our guide and ran to greet him with a hug, calling him "the nicest person in the whole world."Residents like to watch television as they eat; the dining area and adjoining common room are conducive to this. Several recliners and sofas are arranged cozily in the common room. The house is softly lit by overhead fixtures and lamps. Due to the open design of the home there are only two short hallways. Residents decorate their large rooms with their own belongings. An attractive floral border painted between the walls and ceilings helps with depth perception and adds a homey touch to residents' rooms. A beautiful wrought iron fence secures the large outdoor area. Residents often watch the squirrels play from a covered seating area at the center of the garden patio.
