Both the Washington Lane and Church Road signs are marked by bursts of colorful mums and a few nearby benches. Evergreen trees and mums ribbon around the building and in and out of tall grasses and bushes. Hopkins Center's recent upgrade included a new roof and repainting of the exterior and interior. Olive and muted purple loveseats in the lobby complement the Queen Anne-style chairs, which are a darker green. A small cart with a Hopkins Store sign had chips, candy, sodas and Tastykakes. Maple wood furnishings in residents' rooms include a chest of drawers and nightstand. Photographs and artwork add a warm touch to each room. Short-term rehab residents receive a clock radio, telephone and TV. There is one dining room on each of the floors. The first-floor dining room moonlights as an entertainment venue for visiting pianists and singers. Enormous windows flood the room with light. Both the second and third-floor dining rooms have three walls of windows. The second-floor dining room is reserved for residents who require a bit more assistance. The area also doubles as the headquarters of the resident council. The third-floor dining room is shared between residents with dementia and those requiring soft or pureed foods. This room has a grand view onto the tops of trees outside. On the week of our visit, the menu included fish, roast turkey, baked salmon, roast beef and barbecue chicken. Residents often spend time on the patio when the weather is pleasant. Varied activities get residents and staff mingling. Discussions of news and current events bring a lively spark to conversations, whereas the walking club and yoga classes keep residents limber. Monthly birthday parties and frequent happy hours do their part to keep things jolly. Saying the rosary, bible study and Sunday services feed a spiritual need. Arts and crafts are a big hit, as are shopping and museum trips, which occur often. Many staffers have a long tenure here; a few have been at the facility for twenty-five years! The connection between staff and residents was apparent throughout our tour. We spoke with several family members, who related that they were "thrilled" with their loved one's care at Hopkins. The rehab department here is excellent, and is stocked with equipment for both physical and occupational therapies.
