At just a stone's throw from downtown West Chester, Brandywine Hall still exudes the same pastoral air it originally did as part of a farm. The historic stone farmhouse and barn remain on the property, but aren't in use. The newest addition is the facility itself; a dark brown roof hovers over the beige and tan concrete. Mature trees arch along the property, creating beautiful doorways to the landscape. In the lobby, new hardwood floors bump up against wall-to-wall carpet. Large windows are brightened by hand-painted flowers, and beige tones let loose along the walls, shifting from light to dark hues. On the second floor, where most dementia residents reside, "cushy" linoleum had recently been placed on the floors; however, family members have complained that carpet is also needed. Residents' rooms are a standard size and have linoleum floors. Window dressings complement the plaid comforters. Most residents have added their own dressers, recliners and small decorations from home. One resident had a large Elvis pillow on her bed! This facility has both occupational and physical therapy rooms. On our tour, a large group of residents were either working with therapists or exercising on their own. The physical therapy gym is surrounded by glass that has been painted with flowers. The festive air continues with a variety of mobiles and wind chimes, made by residents, hanging from the drop ceiling. Each floor has its own seating area, where nearby vending machines provide sustenance after long gossip sessions. The dining rooms double as activity rooms and are cheered by small flower arrangements on each table. The first-floor dining area is surrounded by a wraparound sunporch complete with rocking chairs. Sunrooms at the end of a few halls sport hand-painted pots with blossoming petunias and violets. Brandywine Hall's small courtyard has shaded patio tables, grassy sections and small trees. Warm weather barbecues and parties enliven the spot. During our tour, we noted a general sense of happiness in both staff and residents. Several friendly residents invited us to see their rooms. The administrator has worked at Brandywine Hall for fourteen years and many of the professional staff have been here for ten or more. Administrative staff members serve residents lunch during the week in an effort to stay in touch. Brandywine Hall is owned by parent company Genesis and is one of a limited number of facilities in the area that accepts Medicaid.
