Lutheran Community at Telford has grown rapidly since its humble beginnings with just a handful of residents in 1962. The facility now includes Harbinger Terrace, an eighty-six-unit apartment building; The Meadows, a fifty-unit building; and Luther Village, which houses eighty-six residents; all are independent living facilities. The skilled nursing facility, assisted living and part of the independent living facilities are all located in a brick building surrounded by trees, fields and assorted greenery. Shaded walkways invite residents to explore the immense land, visit the turtle pond and its slow-paced inhabitants, and enjoy the rural haven that is Lutheran Community. When not strolling the intricately landscaped terrain, residents can people-watch on benches covered by thatched roofing. Residents enjoy a resort-like experience at every level of care. An impressive schedule of activities, including sing-alongs, games, crafts, bingo and outings allows for socialization and community involvement. Many residents enjoy the fitness room, woodshop and thrift shop located in the Health Care Annex, which is staffed almost entirely by their peers. Proceeds from these endeavors benefit the community's skilled nursing facility. With its own dining area, patio, lounges and activities director, the skilled nursing unit was designed to accommodate the specific needs of the population it serves. Residents in this unit each have their own appointed doctor. Contrary to what one might expect of such a large facility, the interiors of each component are cozy and quaint. Each building has a large dining area with its own color scheme and wall-to-wall carpet. Dining rooms staffed by waiters are used exclusively for meals. Several lounges, some of which include working fireplaces, are comfortably furnished.The volunteer program at The Lutheran Community at Telford is impressive. Integral to the success of this cooperative living environment are the hundreds of individuals from the larger community, who offer their time and talents through fund raising, visitation with pets and reading to residents. Junior volunteers also lend their vitality, encouraging residents to stay active and young at heart.
