Situated on thirty-five acres with woodland around the perimeter, the Rockhill Mennonite Community looks like something out of Better Homes and Gardens. The landscaping incorporates a wide assortment of greenery, resembling a brimming nursery. Winding walkways, gardens and petunias dot the land. Water cascades over jutting rocks into a pond laden with lily pads; another pond contains a fish over two feet long! The covered bridge adds a romantic elegance to the scenery, and a cobblestone walkway leads to the front entrance, where covered benches and porch swings provide a perfect resting spot.Three main buildings, all connected by pathways and bridges, house independent, assisted living and skilled nursing residents. Independent residents live in efficiency studios, one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments. Most apartments have modern appliances and new wood cabinets as well as a combination of carpet and hardwood floors. All apartments contain a washer, dryer and porch, with additional storage space in the basement. Independent living residents can choose from several dining areas, including a restaurant-style dining room, a country kitchen and the Balcony Buffet, a large café-style dining area overlooking the rolling hills.Assisted living residents occupy the first floor in the main building, with skilled nursing residents on the second. Assisted living accommodations include suites, private and semiprivate rooms. Many residents bring their own furnishings and home décor. Residents eat in a large dining room with an adjoining outdoor patio, and have access to an activities room, country kitchen and an enclosed courtyard with a decorative pool and fountain. Skilled nursing rooms include both private and semiprivate accommodations. These residents have a choice of several cheerful dining rooms. When we visited this facility, we were amazed by the broad spectrum of meal options available. Lunch that day included fish, chicken and sandwiches as well as a massive salad bar. All residents enjoy an abundance of common rooms, such as a resident-run library, a general store, a greenhouse, an artists' studio and a Florida room. Unique sitting areas throughout provide ample place to connect with friends. Along one hallway, a fountain spills water down a mosaic wall that runs down several stories. Scriptural plaques hang throughout many of the halls.Services for all residents, including geriatric massage and aromatherapy, aid relaxation. Exercise, trips, crafts and intergenerational programming also add fullness to residents' lives. All residents may use the large indoor pool in the health club, strengthening their bodies through gentle water aerobic routines or simply floating and stretching their limbs. Some residents utilize the woodshop to create toys that are sold in the lobby gift shop. Others are expert quilters and puzzle makers.
