Large trees surround Somerton Center, a white brick and stucco building located on a small residential street. At the time of our visit, the facility was undergoing a major renovation, so the place was alive with activity. The interior is awash in fresh tones of pale peach and beige with tile floors. Brand-new windows flood light into a large activity room, and a spacious dining room doubles as an entertainment area with a big-screen TV. Windows here align an entire wall, filling the room with sun. An entire wing is devoted to Russian- speaking residents, with staff who speak the language. Russian-language TV stations and newspapers are available as well. Outdoor barbecues are a favorite among residents who are able to enjoy the large enclosed courtyard. Plenty of tables and chairs, grass and a small garden create a great mini-escape for residents and staff. Moderately sized resident rooms continue the new color scheme, with attractive matching borders and accessories. Residents are welcome to personalize their rooms with their own belongings. Most second-floor rooms have pleasant views of neighboring yards with gardens and children playing. While Somerton Center currently has a dementia unit, the facility is no longer accepting new residents to this area. During the hustle and bustle of renovations, staff was interactive and friendly with residents, helping them safely maneuver the facility. One staff member told us how much she enjoyed working here, and that it is a very family-centered environment that focuses on enriching residents' lives.
