University City, an ethically diverse college neighborhood, is a colorful backdrop for Park Pleasant Nursing Home. The large brick building, conveniently located near a trolley line, showcases a cement courtyard in front with green and white umbrella-topped tables. Park Pleasant owns a dog park on a piece of adjacent land, where neighbors often bring their pets to visit with residents. Plans are in the works to include an after-school program to encourage intergenerational activities. Family-owned and operated, Park Pleasant is proud of its staff, who promote autonomy by valuing residents' opinions regarding activities and renovations. We witnessed, firsthand, the type of teamwork that makes this staff special. During our tour, although the staff was busy admitting two new residents, they were still attentive and caring with the rest of the population. To call this facility clean is a vast understatement. A dispenser is set at each entrance, and staff administers squirts of hand sanitizer after each meal. The tile floors sparkle, reflecting the vast natural and artificial light throughout the space. Paintings and plants add interest to cream-colored lobby walls. A framed tribute to long-term staff members and an impressive brass eagle on a wooden stand create a stately air. Each floor has a large room separated into two spaces for dining and activities. Most residents dine at long L-shaped tables, but those requiring feeding assistance sit at a smaller table. The management team even takes turns serving resident meals! Renovations will transform the dining room into a garden café, sectioned into different "neighborhoods." The existing activity portion is furnished with a small TV and ample reclining chairs. Interesting entries, such as "history of football" and "apple hunting" round out the activity schedule, which also includes arts and crafts, a cooking club, bingo, music and bible study. Clean and spacious resident rooms have large closets, wood-framed windows and immense potential if residents choose to decorate. The facility does not have a separate dementia unit, but individuals with memory impairment are admitted based on the severity of their medical conditions.
