Frederick Douglass, abolitionist and Civil War-era presidential adviser, founded a nurses' training center for African-American women in the building that is now Liberty Court. He envisioned a place where people could exceed their potential and enrich others through expert health care. The skilled nursing facility at Liberty Court incorporates these ideals, empowering its residents to lead full, balanced lives. The needs of modern-day seniors are addressed with amenities such as a computer area with Internet access, a unique offering for a skilled nursing facility. The historically rich building is conveniently located near main roads. The building blends with its urban surroundings, compensating for its limited grounds. A delightful top-floor patio provides a bird's-eye view of the surrounding area. Framed prints and fresh flowers in the main lobby extend a warm welcome for social gatherings. Contemporary furnishings comprise the comfortable, cheerful common areas, which are embellished with seasonal table arrangements. Residents eat their main meal at lunch, and all food is prepared on-site. The dining rooms are also used for activities. Although each floor has its own dining room, the Dining Out program invites residents to eat together on the first floor, allowing a change of scenery and a sense of mobility. Residents appreciate the opportunity to experience different surroundings. Skilled nursing rooms are bright and spacious. The electronic beds have wood frames, evoking a homelike feel. Staff members encourage residents to bring their own furnishings to personalize their space. Residents and staff appear to have a very warm relationship. Moreover, staff really seemed to enjoy their jobs—several have worked here for over twenty years! The fifth floor of Liberty Court houses assisted living residents.
