Located behind Pennypack Park, The Lafayette-Redeemer is nestled into a wooded and slightly mountainous area. The facility, which resembles an apartment complex from the outside, has been run by the Sisters of the Holy Redeemer for nearly twenty years. During our tour, a large group of residents was having a lively discussion in one of the many lobby areas sectioned off by small sofas and chairs. Light burgundy and teal mix in the color scheme. Multiple meeting and visiting rooms flank the lobby. A large fireplace and helpful receptionist just add to the warmth. Residents' apartments come in a variety of sizes, ranging from petite to spacious. Many have balconies; all have large windows that look out onto green or wooded areas. Washers and dryers are tucked into each hallway. The large dining room doubles as a community room; used for large group activities and set with small tables and chairs, it lends an intimate air to the spacious surroundings. Two entrée choices are provided at each meal. A side door leads to the designated smoking area. Between two of the apartment wings stands a large green patio, which is hemmed in by a dense grove of trees. Multiple tables, chairs and a barbecue pit speak to the area's popularity. The front of the building is also popular for chatting, with views of the surrounding greenery, shrubs and trees.The diverse activity schedule covers a wide variety of interests. Games include bingo, bridge and trivia. Sing-alongs, movies, and coffee and conversation hours keep residents social. Exercise classes are numerous. Pet therapy has canine and feline visitors making regular visits. Catholic, Protestant and Jewish services are all held on-site. An in-house Wachovia Bank and general store round out the facility's offerings. Our tour guide, who originally began at the facility working in food service, is currently employed in the administrative offices. As we toured, many residents came up to speak with her—it was obvious she is well regarded. Residents struck us as amiable, active and happy. Staff and residents spoke in a friendly and open manner with one another. Although there was a large continuum of functioning levels, we noted that everyone seemed to have the proper level of care and that individual needs were being met.
