Stapeley in Germantown stands in a residential neighborhood marked by large trees, old homes and friendly faces. Upon entering the community, one first sees a red brick building, the assisted living unit, with a covered porch lined with rocking chairs. Behind the building, there is a small, flat area with seating just in front of a steep decline. Walking paths along the slope reduce the hill's severity. A breezeway with a rotating art exhibit leads to the new independent living building, which also houses the skilled nursing facility. The main lobby is locked, and guests must be buzzed in by security. The parlor off the lobby contains Victorian décor and antique furnishings. Light from large windows illuminates the many bookshelves, framed prints and potted plants in the room. Fish buzz to and fro in a large tank. Many accents emphasize the Quaker heritage and philosophy that informs this facility. Staff and residents alike appeared very happy within the pleasant atmosphere. We met one sophisticated female resident who speaks multiple languages and expressed satisfaction with her home. Staff turnover is low. The average length for employees is about six years.Resident rooms in the independent living section vary in size. Due to the community's hilltop positioning, some rooms are high above the ground with balconies overlooking the trees. On each floor here, apartments line one side of the hallway, with glass along the entire opposite wall. Residents on each floor decide communally how to decorate their halls. The skilled nursing facility, on the first and second floors, has large resident rooms and its own garden. The front building houses the main dining room, a massive space that holds up to one hundred people. Independent and assisted living residents eat at separate times. The unique architecture in the dining room allows abundant natural light through three glass walls; the effect resembles being inside a greenhouse! Trees and greenery surround the room. All food is kosher. A smaller dining room in the rear building accommodates skilled nursing residents. A garden in the main building's solarium and the large library satisfy different interests. Tai chi, pottery, crocheting, knitting, watching movies, singing and art are just a few of the activities offered. Speakers visit frequently. On the day of our tour, the topic was the community's history.
