Harmony Place Assisted Living at Park Ridge, along with several other senior facilities, was built on the grounds where Shriner's Hospital once stood. The street is very busy and not conducive to leisurely strolling, but safer residential streets are not too far away. Ample windows afford exhilarating views of bustling Roosevelt Boulevard. Unique valances add richness to the mint green walls in the upscale lobby. Plush sofas and chairs with varied upholstery fill the room. Sitting areas line the hallways.Resident rooms vary in size, with two-room suites providing maximum legroom. The room we saw had a single bed, a small table with two chairs, a love seat and an ottoman—with room to spare! Large windows in some rooms overlook the enclosed, landscaped courtyard, where walking paths and benches are an invitation to the outdoors. Once a week during the school year, students from the local charter school visit to entertain, play games, exercise and make arts and crafts projects with residents. Activity rooms on each floor are well equipped. Current events groups, religious services and trips to stores and restaurants are staples on the activity calendar. A TV lounge with a gas fireplace, a sunroom with French doors and a common room with a piano all draw crowds. The restaurant-style dining area, adjacent to a private dining room, overlooks the courtyard. Snacks are provided throughout the day. The secure dementia unit is dimmer than the rest of the facility, with fewer windows and muted lighting. In addition to sensory activities, these residents take sightseeing trips and enjoy supervised time outdoors. An enclosed balcony offers another option for soaking in sunlight. The unit's dining room and gathering room sit side by side at the building's center.
