Housed in the original St. Mary's Hospital, Temple East Adult Day Health Center has been completely renovated and shares the building with a senior housing program. A door to the left of the newly decorated lobby identifies the center. The large activity room is attractive, with teal and peach-colored carpet and good natural light. Easy chairs dot the room and there is a big-screen TV, a giant colorful aquarium, a tabletop shuffleboard game and a piano. Straight ahead are staff offices enclosed in glass, allowing the staff clear visibility for observing activities. To the right are large activity tables and lots of chairs. A brand-new enclosed kitchen continues the teal and peach color scheme. Meals are delivered daily from Northeastern Hospital. About half of the participants at Temple East have had at least one stroke, and the other half have early to mild dementia. There is a full-time RN on staff. When a new participant joins the program, the director finds out about his or her interests and background and incorporates relevant activities into the programming, which is designed to promote socialization. One of the most frequent activities includes reminiscing, using photographs of Philadelphia to help stimulate discussion and memory. Music played from a jukebox further fosters memory retention by listening to familiar songs. Current events discussions are popular, and visits from magicians and musicians are regular occurrences. We found the director knowledgeable, warm and very down-to-earth.
