I love it here. I like the food. I like the activities." Simply stated, yet so significant, this participant comment expresses sentiments likely shared by everyone involved with Living Independently for Elders (LIFE). LIFE has another location on Columbus Boulevard. Both provide complete long-term, community-based, acute, rehabilitative, primary and preventive health care. The facility at Greater Grays Ferry Estates, a modern brick building, has a concrete patio off the main recreational area where residents can sit and enjoy the raised gardens and many potted plants.Framed photographs and residents' artwork line the center's brightly painted walls. A recreational room houses potted plants and two chirping birds in cages. A discussion room includes a big-screen TV and small library. At the time of our visit, a group of men were playing an intense game of pinochle. The dining room, where residents eat a continental breakfast and hot lunch, doubles as a common room. Prayer services, exercise, card games and pet therapy are all popular. Residents also take field trips—the New Jersey State Aquarium being a favorite. Partnered with a child day care, LIFE provides intergenerational programming. Some of the participants have moderate to severe dementia, but attend the program regularly. We noticed strong bonds between participants and staff. The facility employs social workers, physical, occupational and recreational therapists, pharmacists, health care aides, spiritual care counselors and a dietician. Staff is on-call twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.
