Senior Care of Center City, the only adult day care center in the area, is located within the Sidney Hillman Medical Center. Formerly Senior Care of Society Hill, this brick building is conveniently located near shopping and public transportation. The outdoor areas at this facility are impressive. A garden, patio seating, barbecue facilities and a section for horseshoes provide participants with multiple options for outside enjoyment. Tables with umbrellas offer shaded seating for comfortable lounging. Outside activities are popular modes of socialization for participants, who especially like outings to local restaurants and the Dollar Store. Staff members often take lower-functioning participants on scenic rides. The center's interior is equally appealing. Lunches, activities and special events take place in a large common room. Although there is a TV, staff members encourage participants to engage in more mentally stimulating activities like sensory groups, arts and crafts, current events discussions, sing-alongs, cooking groups, movement therapy, jigsaw puzzles and men's and women's clubs. At the time of our visit, staff members and participants were observing Adult Day Center Week. Music, food and entertainment marked this special celebration. The level of care and the passion behind it can be accurately assessed by reading participants' surveys, completed just prior to the occasion. One participant offered the following sentiment: "I would feel such a void if it wasn't for Senior Care of Center City. I would miss it all!" A sincere bonding between staff and participants alike endow this center with the type of warmth that can't be manufactured.
