Trees, grass and the proverbial quiet of the suburbs mark the exterior to this facility, which is located in a small shopping center in a community of neatly rowed homes. Northeast Adult Day Care is geared towards its Russian participants: all communication, both verbal and visual, is in Russian. During our tour, a Russian-language cable station played on a big-screen TV in the main room. Meals have a decidedly Slavic bent as well. Inside the main room, black tile flooring inlaid with pink pieces picks up on the pink and burgundy of the floral wall coverings. The front of the room is taken over by padded seats facing the stage while comfortable couches slouch in the back. Live plants and even livelier pictures hang on walls. Other areas include offices, a quiet room (where participants are monitored medically when they are not feeling well), a large TV room and a game room. In back, a fenced-in patio offers an outdoor alternative. A short hallway leads into the rehab room, which is well equipped and includes a whirlpool. Activities schedules are fairly packed and feature music therapy, reminiscence and current events discussions. Lectures on subjects such as Jewish history and assorted medical issues occur regularly. Singers are brought in to entertain; music is the most popular activity. Although the participants are mostly mobile—with some still living independently—scenic drives are a popular daytime excursion. Staff and participants seem to have created a true sense of community. We noted how helpful the staff was as residents piled onto buses or into private cars at the end of the day—afterward, they immediately set about cleaning the facility with a real spirit of pride in their community.
