We were pleased to learn that New Hope staff members are mindful of the heavy traffic whizzing by on Bustleton Avenue and take extra precautions to deter wandering. Parking is available in the adjacent lot. The brick storefront is painted white and blue. Past the secured entrance, evidence of the predominantly Russian population abounds—hanging program notices, signage and activity listings are all printed in Russian. A combination of recessed and fluorescent lighting sweeps through the program room, dining area and several small common areas designated for activities and quiet time. A game room was set up with a chess table as we passed—we hear there's a lot of local talent! Participants may also make use of the shower room at New Hope. A nurse or health aide visits the center several times a week. Typical activity offerings include current events and general discussion groups, pop culture news, listening to music or playing the piano, exercise and various board games. Most guest lecturers speak Russian, facilitating active discussion and interaction among participants. A group of friendly women, dressed to the nines and with impeccable makeup, welcomed us into their social circle on the porch. Although English was not their first language, they were very warm and each of them expressed their affinity for the program. New Hope is a great niche for the elderly Russian community.
