Interac Adult Day Services Center is housed in a Victorian mansion along with its parent multiservice agency, Intercommunity Action, Inc. A large, covered wraparound porch encases the building, which could use a bit of upkeep. The center resides in the first floor sunroom, which is divided into two sections. Windows allow lots of natural sunlight to permeate the space. One section is used for activities; meals take place in the other. Participants may rest in a smaller room with a bed and recliner located just off the activity area. Bathrooms are located in the rear of the building, requiring participants to have an attendant because of its location. On our visit, we observed a trained and highly committed staff interacting and working with participants during a discussion activity. Staff explained to participants what they were doing and why, and seemed determined to help them remain involved in the community by maintaining and improving their skills. The director often pulls in medical and nursing students to provide support for the program. Staff employs many creative activities to engage participants cognitively as well as physically. In addition to arts and crafts and exercise, participants play board games, come up with stories to tell each other, go on shopping trips, have current events discussions and, of course, play bingo. Participants enjoy the many parties thrown by staff; all holidays are celebrated. Music therapy and sing-alongs are regular occurrences, as are performances by a volunteer who comes to play the guitar for participants. A Velcro dartboard and pet therapy are participant favorites.
