The main stone building of Pickering Manor was once home to H. Russell Pickering, a local man who generously left both his residence and a sum of money to Newtown Borough, for the purpose of housing seniors. The structure now contains administrative offices and meeting rooms, while assisted living and skilled nursing residents occupy the attached two-story building. Independent living residents choose from two distinct settings; a space in the beautifully landscaped apartment building or a double-unit cottage. When we visited, the facility was undergoing extensive renovations. The auditorium had become the temporary milieu for both meals and activities. Residents seemed to enjoy the experience, dining to the chirps of over a dozen caged birds. Several county fair award-winning plants and crafts on display here demonstrated residents' proclivity for a little healthy competition.Residents with mild dementia are integrated into the skilled nursing facility. Visitors are encouraged and are welcome anytime, day or night. Rooms appeared bright and comfortable. Residents tend to bring their own furnishings to personalize their rooms. Assisted living accommodations are similar in layout, with ample closet space and pleasant garden views. Both the assisted living and skilled nursing units contain their own attractive dining room. Separate activity calendars for both resident groups have religious services, movies, crafts and games. A greenhouse keeps green-thumbed residents happy.Pickering Manor hosts a number of annual fundraising events, including a spring luncheon and fashion show, a cocktail garden party and a summer block party featuring food, music and games for children. Physical, occupational and speech therapies constitute an exemplary therapy program.
