Gardens and white picket fences surround many of the apartments, villas and carriage homes that make up White Horse Village. White trim offsets the beige or gray exteriors of the villas, some of which have screened-in porches or carports. The carriage houses are individual tan stucco buildings. Since the community covers eighty-four acres adjacent to Ridley Creek State Park, hiking and strolling are de rigueur, although buses cruising the campus make numerous stops. The independent living facility attracts the younger retiree set who enjoy the outdoors and like to walk up to events in the main building. The campus also houses the Canterbury skilled nursing facility and two assisted living facilities—Bridlewood, and for memory-impaired residents, Four Seasons. A putting green, shuffleboard court, croquet lawn and a playground for little visitors are on-site.The interior of the main building calls to mind a retreat center with furnishings that tend toward utility and comfort. Off-white walls are trimmed by light wood, and colorful pillows brighten wooden benches. The assisted living quarters are comprised of large studio apartments. Residents here use the communal refrigerator in the activity room. Each of the specialized facilities has its own dining room, but everyone is welcome to eat in the main dining area. There is also a formal dining room where patrons dress up in the evenings. The relaxed atmosphere of the café proffers similar fare, but also to-go packaging and groceries. A professional food service company manages the food preparation, menus and service; all are high quality. The day of our tour was "wine and cheese day," with a huge selection of both! Common areas include an art studio and large library with many resources for the visually impaired such as large-print books and reading machines. A big-screen TV and piano share space in the card room. The community's seventy-person resident chorus performs in the auditorium with a state-of-the-art sound system. A hallway doubles as a gallery with a changing roster of artists on display.Staff and management believe that quality care takes commitment, dedication and an ability to listen to residents. A great many facilities have a community feel, but White Horse Village is akin to a town. There are forty-two resident committees with three residents serving non-paid positions on the board of directors. Four residents volunteer in the marketing department, and another formed a CCRC Area Council, which works as a resource and think tank with nearby facilities. Two woodshops repair furniture for residents and the outside community; all work is done by resident volunteers. Proceeds are put into an endowment fund that helps needy residents, provides employee scholarships and works toward campus-wide improvements. Even profits from resident-planted flowers and vegetables are turned over to the fund. Perhaps most interesting is how diverse the community is. The resident population includes retired ministers, artists, singers and musicians. The facility has an onsite medical staff with a general practitioner as well as specialists such as dermatologists and neurologists.
