A white picket fence, several benches and flying flags surround the peach-colored stucco exterior of Sterling Healthcare. The building is located in a quiet residential neighborhood. Colorful flowers and a small fountain enliven the front area. A beautiful outdoor area called the Healing Garden has plenty of seating, greenery, flowers and winding paths to roam. Green, peach and gold patterns compose the lobby décor. The facility recently underwent a massive renovation, which has left it looking sparklingly new. Resident bedrooms are spacious and well-lit and come with cable-ready TV. Each floor has its own dining room and balcony, where residents can enjoy the fresh air. Sterling Healthcare is proud of its well-equipped therapy area and exceptional wound care program. The therapy program is staffed with physical and occupational therapists who provide residents individual attention. One resident regained his ability to walk following therapy and benefited so completely from the program that his level of care changed from long- to short-term! The facility accommodates residents with mild dementia and Alzheimer's. Lower functioning residents, whose illnesses have progressed to more severe levels, are housed in a separate twenty-two person unit. A recent remodel of this unit has spruced up the surroundings and added flat-screen TVs. These residents are encouraged to socialize and engage in daily activities similar to those offered to residents without dementia. Regularly scheduled activities include sensory stimulation, games, music therapy, singing and movement exercises. These residents are not averse to having fun, and the talented activities director frequently organizes barbecues, outdoor shows, and trips to Kmart or Target for the general resident population. A newly implemented program, Person Centered Care, focuses on individualizing each resident's care plan.
