Southern Chester County Center is a huge happy place. Located in a shopping center, it is simply furnished, but strong in personality. The center consists of two long rooms with blue carpet and white walls adorned with pictures of pretty beach scenes. At least twenty attractive high-back lounge chairs form a circle, and at the time of our visit participants were seated and playing a word game led by staff. The kitchen and dining area are set off by a large glass partition. Programming at this center is appropriately geared to the varied needs of the participants. Some still have good social skills while others are more severely impaired and have difficulty communicating. Intergenerational therapy is in place for participants to socialize with local children. Other activities include dance, music, range-of-motion games, poetry readings and field trips to the nearby Chester County Fair and Longwood Gardens. The staff here are very warm and friendly and seemed to know participants exceptionally well. These participants were a great mixed group, and on our afternoon visit, they wore big smiles as they readied themselves—party hats on—for the three-person birthday party about to commence. We were delighted to meet "Moose," a very special participant who, at 102, still moves about with the aid of a walker, and taught yoga through her mid-nineties!
