Fort Washington Estates is a private, gated community set back from the busy suburban streets surrounding it. The modern-looking facility is located in a safe, middle-class neighborhood. A portico with white columns shades the main entrance, further enhanced by a fountain and gazebo amid trees and flora. Greenery envelops the landscape, peppered with patios, gardens and seating areas. The dementia section includes a memory garden; delicate flowers and intricate landscaping create a visual marvel. Willowbrooke Court, the skilled nursing facility, Oakbridge Terrace, the assisted living facility, and four independent living buildings, Aspen, Birch, Chestnut and Spruce, compose the sixteen-acre campus. The interiors are homey, with artwork and tasteful décor. Resident rooms all boast balconies, patios and large windows. The lobby in the main building features a fireplace, grandfather clock, sconces and a glass curio case. Staff members enjoy infusing the space with holiday spirit, buying poinsettias in the winter; this past spring they even delivered tulips and hyacinths to every resident! At the time of our visit, planned additions to the facilities included a café, beauty salon and a private visiting room in the skilled nursing building. The existing community rooms are beyond compare. One common space has a magnificently carved eagle perched above a fireplace. The auditorium includes a grand piano, slide projector and billiard table. Although all residents are welcome to enjoy these facilities, one can easily imagine a grouping of dapper gentlemen in smoking jackets bonding fraternally around the pool table. Dining is pleasant and social, underscored by soothing music. Linens and silk flowers adorn all tables. Residents can choose from three restaurant-quality options, including kosher selections, at each meal. Soup and salad precede each entrée, which includes assorted seafood and a variety of meat dishes. Desserts always include a sugar-free offering. In warm weather, staff members and residents often barbecue outside. Fort Washington staffs its own fitness personnel, who often conduct swimming lessons at community pools. Residents can also enjoy morning walks, crafts, videos, bus trips to the mall and zoo, onsite entertainment, exercise and visits from political figures. Residents celebrate each other's birthdays, demonstrating a close-knit connection that is standard in this community. While touring this facility, we were privy to some very touching personal stories. One former resident wrote in a letter, "A great big thank you for all your tender, loving care during my stay at Willowbrooke Court. I know it did a lot to aid in my recovery so that I am able to return to my apartment. This is a wonderful place to be if you need ?special care.' Thank you again for everything.
