A country road winds its way through woods and fields to reach the building's covered porch, where several potted plants hang over the whitewashed fence. Inside, the facility successfully evokes the atmosphere of a private home. In fact, we learned that Alterra staffers share most duties, each one thereby achieving a greater understanding of individual residents, who are thought of as the facility's "homeowners" rather than clients. Our guide brought her granddaughter along on the tour—evidence that a family philosophy is very much ingrained in the management style. Constant greetings, soft music and mingling groups all contributed to the friendly atmosphere.

Near the entrance is a dayroom, beyond which is a spacious café and dining area with a long counter and beautiful hardwood floors. Upon close inspection, the chef's house salad, packed with an array of veggies, induced loud rumblings in our bellies! Snacks and drinks are served periodically throughout the day. The cozy living rooms have wall-to-wall carpet, TVs and bookshelves stocked with great reading material. Residents' rooms are a standard affair, with carpet, nightstands and a few personal effects. Although the front patio is charming, the truly enticing outdoor spot is the courtyard: walkways meander between flower beds and a vegetable garden tended by residents and staff. Seating options are plentiful. The secure and enclosed courtyard allows residents to enjoy the outdoors safely and at their leisure.

By the time we toured, the Elvis impersonator who had entertained residents the previous evening, had left the building—but we saw remnants of his show, as paper musical notes still hung from the dining room ceiling. The regular craft and music programs are augmented by aromatherapy sessions, religious services and reminiscence discussions. Occasional field trips take place as well.
