Simpson House in Philadelphia, originally the Methodist Episcopal Home for the Aged, expanded its mission with the inception of suburban Simpson Meadows. The community offers independent and assisted living accommodations on a landscaped six-acre campus. A white-trimmed porch with hanging flower baskets surrounds the main entrance. A separate, secure garden welcomes dementia residents. Well-manicured grass, trees and shrubs crisscross the grounds, with walking paths, benches and gardens throughout. A large gazebo sits amid a garden, and the picturesque qualities continue indoors with a huge stained-glass window in front bringing chromatic light to the lobby.

One and two-bedroom independent living apartments all offer full kitchens; some have dining rooms. The assisted living unit on the second floor offers two layout options, each with living rooms, kitchenettes, full baths and large windows. Most residents bring their own furnishings. They are encouraged to leave their doors ajar when home, to allow for staff monitoring and increased interaction with their peers.

The ground floor houses the main dining room, garden café, community room, exercise room and general store. Assisted living residents have their own dining space, a living room with a fireplace and piano, an activity room and a kitchen, all decorated with a country theme. Full daily breakfasts include French toast or waffles, eggs and breakfast meats. When we visited, several residents were rolling dough to bake apple pies.

Residents involve themselves in a varied activity schedule that includes shopping, cooking, attending religious gatherings and watching video presentations. A men's group, resident choir and bridge club welcome new members regularly. Entertainers who offer music, pet visits and slide presentations visit often. One resident's daughter was visiting with her two dogs when we toured, both pets sharing kisses with all the residents. Intergenerational programming allows residents to help elementary school students with homework and attend practice musical performances at West Chester University. Many residents are passionate about volunteer work.
