At first glance, we never would have guessed that Family Matters Adult Day Center was once a bank. With its gray stone exterior, great columns, arched windows and peaked roof, the center is reminiscent of an ancient European castle. Inside, both program rooms are naturally bright. The center can accommodate up to sixty participants; however, the daily average is about thirty, which affords each participant more individual attention. Lavish couches and chairs, fragrant blossoms and numerous potted plants infuse the airy space with a homey feel.Michelle, the activity coordinator, informed us that group reminiscence is key to the programming. One unique program incorporates a weekly theme box. From baseball to the Philadelphia Zoo and "Growing up on the Prairie," each box is brimming with paraphernalia relevant to its theme. Recently, participants enjoyed the radio show box, which included a slide show of popular twenties and thirties radio show hosts, recorded shows on cassette, miniature radios and scripts of radio skits. Also included in the box were classic Ovaltine bottles and Little Orphan Annie gear—both of which shot to fame after mass radio advertising in the 1920s. All of the boxes trigger discussions among the participants. "Anything having to do with the past is popular," Michelle confirmed. On our visit, we were pleased to see such a large group enthralled in the current events discussion. In addition to the packed activity calendar, the center offers onsite personal services ranging from manicures and beautician services to podiatry and eye care. Physical and occupational therapies are integral to the program. Family Matters boasts a thoughtful and interactive program for seniors of all cognitive levels. One participant with advanced Alzheimer's was sitting alone at a table when we witnessed a staff member approach him. She placed a tactile stimulation box in front of him, guiding his hands over the various items inside. She explained how the participant, a former carpenter, responds well to therapy tools that are tangible. Family Matters' staff members seemed well-versed in participants' individual histories, which we believe only strengthens their caregiving abilities. The program accepts both COSA and Liberty Resources as reimbursement.
