The Belvedere definitely shines where it matters most: resident care. Our guide, an admissions department staff member, addressed residents throughout the tour with genuine concern for their needs. Preventative programs anticipate potential risks; the Falling Star program, for example, prevents potential injuries by identifying residents prone to falling with large yellow stars on their doors. Residents often congregate at the front porch, lined with rocking chairs. The building's facade has a homey feel, but the interior adopts a more institutional look. Major ongoing renovations should bring the facility's appearance in line with the progressive level of care offered here. The slated makeover includes a pulmonary care unit, which will accommodate residents who require oxygen. One dining room hosts restorative dining, for residents who need to be retrained in feeding themselves. Department heads take turns serving meals in a second bright dining room. Activities include trips to museums and casinos for those who are able. Staff members evaluate residents' level of functioning on a monthly basis to ensure they engage in appropriate events. The Homestead Unit provides a bright, cheerful space for residents with dementia. Memory boxes containing photographs are situated outside each resident's room. A comfy lounge—with a big-screen TV and an aquarium— leads to a quaint patio. The dining room doubles as an activity room. At the time of our tour, several residents with dementia were holding and nurturing lifelike baby dolls. The activity appeared to be very important to residents who seemed to find a lot of satisfaction and responsibility in "caring" for the dolls.
