Beaumont at Bryn Mawr consists of two residential buildings as well as the Austin Mansion and sixty-eight private villas. Built in 1912 for William Liseter Austin, former president of Baldwin Locomotive Works, the mansion blends with the many extravagant homes within the prestigious Main Line area. Residents can explore the grounds within the fifty-acre campus via numerous walking trails. A tree-encased pond provides a tranquil spot to skip rocks, sky gaze and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. A greenhouse, putting green and vegetable garden also contribute to this utopian community. Independent living residents reside either in the private villas or one or two-bedroom apartments. An impressive activity schedule encourages socialization with fellow residents—from high teas and birthday celebrations, to bingo, trips to the theater and other cultural events like the Philadelphia Flower Show—there is really something to interest everyone. As part of this cooperative housing corporation, all residents own their apartments and are shareholders of Beaumont. As such, they have a say in every decision that affects their lives. The "developer" of the cooperative is now a resident and shareholder of Beaumont, as are all of the residents who come through the independent living facility. The assisted living unit, on the upper floors of the mansion, contains fifteen luxurious rooms. Each one has a marble fireplace, antique mirrors and a chandelier. Residents usually provide their own furnishings. Staff includes one RN, two LPNs and five CNAs. Assisted and independent living residents share seven dining rooms, which are lavishly decorated with oil paintings and carved marble fireplaces. The Oak Room, Mr. Austin's original dining room, includes a built-in buffet with an antique Victorian china display. Breakfast is served in residents' rooms; lunches are served in either the informal Grill Room or the Porch Terrace. A dinner menu might include vichyssoise, duck breast with honey ginger and wild berry sauce, and mango salad with grilled shrimp. The skilled nursing unit is to the right of the lobby, which is illuminated by a skylight. Each spacious room has a wood and glass memory box at its entrance. A skilled staff comprised of three MDs, four RNs, five LPNs and fifteen CNAs help guarantee residents attentive care. A family lounge is the hub of this unit, although the dining room provides an elegant locale for eating and engaging in activities. Natural light abounds, complemented by the soft glow of several chandeliers. Raised tables accommodate residents in wheelchairs. A brick path runs past a garden and fountain.Beaumont's music room contains an Aeolian pipe organ, two cellos in an ornate wooden case, and frescoes overhead, reminiscent of the Sistine Chapel. A clubroom, billiard room, fitness center, auditorium, library, craft studio, theater and various cocktail lounges are just some of the communal spaces. An enclosed porch includes original stone walls, one of which is lined with a floor-to-ceiling menu! The Green Room, the original living room, is stately and grandly decorated. The Beaumont Room includes a baby grand piano and a big-screen TV and is used primarily for fitness.
