Participants listen to soft lullabies and observe colorful bubbles floating effortlessly up and down clear "towers" filled with water. They relax in antigravity massage chairs and look at fiber-optic lights dancing in the room while different aromas fill the air. What sounds like a trip to the local exploratorium is actually therapy in action at Main Line Adult Day Center. Snoezelen, a controlled multisensory stimulation progam designed to develop and enhance the senses, is very much in place here. Independent and memory-impaired programs are both offered. There is a strong emphasis on maintaining a participant's life skills. Participants enjoy a cooking club, spelling bees and piano concerts. An intergenerational program provides interaction with local children. Daily activities include exercise, music therapy and socialization. Regular visits from pet therapy dogs Jamie, Shakespeare and Kobe, and a basket of two resident guinea pigs are cherished by the animal lovers in the group. Located in an affluent neighborhood, the center sits on the grounds of the Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church. Formerly the church pastor's home, the building retains its homey feel with features such as the large wraparound porch. We checked out the enclosed garden, which, at the time, was full of peppers, tomatoes and cucumbers. A ceramic fountain is a lovely addition. Inside, participant artwork, potted plants, several aquariums and seven chirping birds make for a lively enviroment. There are several activity rooms with big-screen TVs. Partipants enjoy delicious catered meals in two dining rooms, one of which boasts a nautical-themed mural painted by students of the neighboring Baldwin School. That day's lunch was chicken cordon bleu with creamed corn and green beans. Participants seem to view each other as a community of peers, inquiring about each other in the event of an absence or illness. One former participant originally came to Main Line following a stroke. Confined to a wheelchair and a feeding tube, staff worked closely with him every day. The gentleman is now a volunteer who tends the center's garden. Another client, a woman with dementia, came in with two broken arms and in a wheelchair. She went from that wheelchair to a walker—and is now walking on her own again! These are just two of the success stories that have sprung from Main Line Adult Day Center.
