Lawrence Park Adult Day Services benefits from its location inside a large medical building—participants can be escorted by staff to medical appointments within the building, saving relatives from having to take a day off from work to do so. Participants are split into three groups—the general population, those with mild dementia, and those in the more advanced stages. Each group addresses four areas on a daily basis: recreation, socialization, and cognitive and physical exercise. The skylighted interior is spacious, bright and pleasant: small rooms allow a measure of privacy for activities not occurring in the main area. Red paper decorations swoop down from the high ceilings in the main room with a bit of whimsy. Smaller rooms include an exercise room, a quiet room and one for each dementia program. The quiet room is filled with couches and hosts special events, like the volunteer-based story reading for female participants that takes place during the men's weekly club meeting. Crossword puzzles and tactile games stimulate participants' minds and bodies while card games keep up a convivial atmosphere. Reminiscence kits consisting of visual and physical materials are used with the mild dementia population. The well-run program thrives on diverse lines of programming that create a community but also see to individual needs. The staff is very caring and involved—so much so that a few have their children come in to volunteer at the facility. We noted three youngsters getting involved and adding a bit of cheer while we toured. Adult volunteers frequent the facility, too—including an artist who guides a monthly painting session. While Lawrence Park Adult Day Services doesn't provide transportation, they can arrange it through various transit organizations.
