With a master's degree in geriatric care, the owner of Generations Adult Day Center runs a program that is innovative and exciting. The activities are designed to be socially, mentally and physically stimulating. Participants are divided into three groups based on their levels of functioning, and enjoy special events and performances onsite. At the time of our visit, three staff members tended to separate groups, and all participants appeared to be genuinely happy and engaged. This red brick building resembles a quaint family home with blue shutters and white trim around the windows. Set in a suburban neighborhood across from a shopping center, the facility is both private and immersed within the community. The large, open interior features a colorful mix of blues, pinks and greens. The result is a space so comfortable one could easily relax with a book, snuggle up to watch a movie or even take a nap. Three activity areas, one with tables and chairs for meals, are separate from the living space. Smaller rooms include a library and kitchen. The center does not have any outdoor space, but this doesn't discourage participants from being active indoors. One participant enjoys his daily routine, which includes reading in the library after lunch and enjoying video programs on various topics on Fridays. Staff members are required to be certified nurse's assistants; this ensures participants are safe in case of emergency. Generations offers a truly homey experience—just ask the participant who has been attending the program since its inception ten years ago!
