BEELONG Adult Day Services is a recently renovated space in the heart of a quiet working-class neighborhood. The program shares a building with the local fire department, ensuring monthly fire drills and safety checks. Great care has been taken to create a home-like atmosphere within the functional space, which includes nurses and staff offices, a craft room and kitchen. The main room is skillfully divided into areas for visiting, dining and large group activities. A lovely aquarium, birdcage and cushy furniture make for a very pleasing environment.BEELONG provides a good range of services to its participants, including therapeutic recreation, physical and occupational therapies and shower facilities, in addition to caregiver support and education. A hairdresser and podiatrist lend their skills as well. A creative cache of stimulating activities, ranging from cooking and baking to letter writing and tie-dyeing, is also offered. A recent calendar of events posted a Wild, Wild West Day, a Captain Hook's costume party, bowling tournaments and bingo and pizza parties. During our visit, participants sang along to a visiting guitarist and vocalist. We were very impressed at the staff's level of involvement with participants, who seemed to be enjoying themselves thoroughly.The Falling Star program has participants wearing a small star sticker so as to alert others that they are prone to falling or dropping their canes. A client counsel meets monthly and offers a forum for participants to voice opinions and suggest activities and field trips. Alzheimer's participants are accepted, but must be able to stand upright (at least briefly) with help.
