Many residents sat outside as we approached the white stone building, which is surrounded by a fence. The building's green trim is mimicked by the grassy areas surrounding this somewhat rural property. During our tour, we noted that both staff and residents were quite active. Most residents are local and therefore family visits occur often. The constant stream of visitors adds to the facility's cheeriness. One man who we met during our tour visits his wife daily, bringing her coffee from her favorite place. The location of the lobby is optimal, with a wall of windows looking onto the outdoors. Blue carpet meanders underneath floral-patterned chairs and couches. In residents' rooms, cream and blue tiles make up the flooring; walls are either blue or pink. Every room sports a large window with pretty window treatments. Furniture provided by the facility includes a closet, dresser and nightstand. Both floors have a dining room. As the upstairs unit is more populated, its dining room has two sittings, one reserved for residents requiring assistance with eating. Both have natural light spilling in from many windows. Wood tables are dressed up by colored Formica tops, which also provide a place to play bingo and other games. The upstairs dayroom is used for scheduled activities and is a comfortable place for residents to chat with one another. Its downstairs counterpart—with a TV and jukebox—leads outside to a patio. The fenced-in area has stocky shade trees, a few flowerbeds and a tented seating area. Residents with dementia are mixed in with the general population. However, the three activity programs at this facility are informed by residents' preferences and level of functioning. Regularly scheduled trips include excursions to casinos, movie theatres, malls, restaurants and Wal-Mart. The therapy program is very strong, with a staff physical therapist, occupational therapist and speech therapist. The staff's Love Committee holds fund-raising events with proceeds benefiting the residents.
