Majestic pillars frame the doorway to Blue Bell Place, which is reached by turning off a main thoroughfare onto a quiet street. The reception area is marked by high ceilings and a grand player piano. A large spiral staircase adds to the sumptuous feel of the mauve and cream-colored facility. New furnishings are augmented by a large aquarium in the sitting room. Like a well-executed tango, the facility's many windows and sunlight beaming in partner up for a dazzling display of clean lines. Basic furnishings are available, but residents are urged to bring their own. Bedrooms and bathrooms all have an emergency call cord and each resident wears an emergency alert pendant as an added precaution. Built-in bath seats are a nice touch. The facility's physical beauty culminates in the common areas. Both floors feature a working fireplace, and many books line the cozy library. Picket fences hem in both of the courtyards. One is located in the center of the building; the other is only accessible from the Alzheimer's unit. The trees shading the benches dissuade sunlight from bothering residents. Walkways throughout invite strolling. Redolent of an upscale hotel restaurant, Blue Bell Place provides a variety of menu options.

Bingo, crafts, scrapbooking and sing-along activities create a jovial atmosphere, along with ice cream socials, movie nights, happy hour, and regular outings for shopping, picnics, museums and ballgames. A beach party was in full swing as we toured the facility; casually attired residents (some even with straw hats!) mingled in a room while waiting for a beach-style picnic to start. Also during our tour, we saw residents immersed in reading or watching TV while others were outside walking or simply enjoying nature. The staff's interaction with residents was always pleasant and respectful—both groups appear to enjoy each other's company. Chatting between staff, administration and residents is a common and natural occurrence. A certified staff pet therapist ensures the canine and feline residents are all well cared for.
