Woods and sprawling grassland surround Helping Hands, a simple brick building. At the back of the center, participants can sit at benches on a covered wooden deck overlooking miles of greenery. Friendly staff members foster an environment conducive to growth and learning. Helping Hands serves both the elderly and developmentally disabled communities. The Aging Program accommodates adults sixty-five and older, focusing on maintaining physical and cognitive functioning. Higher-functioning seniors may participate in the adult day program. The interior includes four classrooms, allowing participants ample space to hone their daily living and vocational skills. There is a workshop area as well, where participants complete contract work for local businesses. A full kitchen accommodates cooking activities. Games, crafts, trivia, birthday parties and trips into the community are all popular activities. Favorite spots include shopping centers, restaurants, parks and a unique ice cream shop with a petting zoo. When we visited Helping Hands, staff members told us about a recent visit from Ronald McDonald. Participants bring their own snacks from home to eat during the day, but animal crackers and assorted light fare is provided.
